Match Report by Steve Clapp
A sensational, see-saw game at The Ridings saw Sodbury beat top side Bishopston by five wickets to replace them at the top of the table.
Sodbury lost the toss and bowled first but got off to a flying start. Jamie Wakefield picked up a wicket with the second ball of the game and ripped through the Bishopston top order with four quick wickets.
Agressive Bishopston Batting
Opening partner Jay Penfold also joined in on the act as the visitors slumped to 58 for 5. However a some aggressive Bishopston rear guard action saw them consolidate with 6th wicket partnership of 46 before Penfold broke that up with his second wicket.
Spinners fight back
Some more big hitting swung the game back in the visitors favour but then spinners Kris Davis and Jamie Rendell entered the fray. The pair finished the Bishopston resistance with Davis (3 for 29) the main destroyer. Rendell also bowled accurately finishing with 1 for 24.
Bishopston were all out for 182, a total Sodbury would have taken before the game.
Chipping Sodbury Cricket Club Respond
In response however, Sodbury got off to a disastrous start and were in deep trouble at 9 for 3.
Fight back begins
However Harry Webb and Kris Davis batted maturely to start the Sodbury fight back, sharing a half century partnership before Davis was needlessly run out for a promising 38.
Harry Webb soon followed for a patient 29 and at 89 for 5 Sodbury were again in a tight spot. Steve Clapp joined Craig Scully at the crease and the experienced duo set about their target.
Experienced Duo get to Work
A flurry of boundaries helped spread the field and then both batsmen worked the ball around to pick up the ones and twos they needed. The 50 partnership was reached at less than a run a ball and apart from Scully being dropped in the deep with 15 needed, the pair batted faultlessly.
Duo take team home with 50s
Scully reached his half century with a single in the 43rd over and it was left to Clapp to finish the game with two boundaries to take his side home and also reach his 50 in the process.
The 94 run partnership had come at a crucial time for Sodbury as they eventually coasted home with 5 wickets and 3 overs to spare.
Tony Garton thanks the Support
"Both myself and the 1st XI really did appreciate the fantastic support given on Saturday." said Chair of Cricket Tony Garton "It was wonderful to see a large crowd all giving their support in what was an absolutely must win game, and in turn Jamie and the team duly delivering. A superb day given the rest of the results to boot. Thanks to all."
