Fantasy Cricket goes down to the wire

Last weekend the league cricket season came to an end for Chipping Sodbury and with it came the finale of the inaugural CSCC Fantasy Cricket competition. With only two weekends of cricket to go there were only 3 points separating the top three teams, so it went right down to the wire.

Consistently good team performances from Sarah Sheppards' 'Sheppard's Sheep' and Bob Soper's F Troop kept them in the top three for most of the season, but the pressure told in the final weeks and neither of them quite had the stamina to claim top spot. In the end Richard Kingscott's 'Part-timers' and Cavan Smythe's 'Smythie's Badgers' came from nowhere on the back of some impressive bowling performances in the closing league games from Cav himself and Rob Wakefield.

Cav's five wickets and Rob's 3 wickets against Blagdon in the final league games on Saturday proved to be enough to ensure that no-one could catch the top two from the week before, and so Cavan Smythe's 'Smythies Badgers' with a total of 503 points took the first place cash prize of £90 plus a Jeroboam of Veuve Cliquot Champagne. Richard Kingscott picked up the second place prize money of £36 and Bob Soper's 'F Troop' took the £18 3rd place cash.

There were some high class individual performances from players throughout the season with Rob Wakefield, Jon Toghill and Rob Fowler worthy of particular mention. However, coincidentally it was none other than Cavan Symthe who claimed the title of Fantasy Cricket's most valuable player with a whopping 100 points scored mainly as a result of his tally of 35 league wickets. Cav wins a 1982 Ford Capri for his efforts donated by our kind sponsors Rajani Superstores.

If you're one of the many people now wandering just what could have been achieved with some more shrewd selection at the start of the year, the strongest possible Fantasy Cricket team would have scored you 636 points and would have included Jay Penfold, Micky Pearson, Steve Doidge, Ross Granger, James Aylott, Rob Fowler, Huge Sprackman, Cav Smythe, Wackers Senior, Jon Toghill and Steve Bush, with Bushy being dropped to make way for Alex Tebbitt at the half-way stage.

Thanks to all those that entered the resounding success that was this year's competition. It'll be back next year at around about March time with a few subtle changes, so keep your eyes on this website.

Cheers

David Reynolds

CSCC Fantasy Cricket 2003 Chairman
