A woman was left trapped in remote countryside for nearly two hours after her foot became trapped in a cattle grid on Chipping Sodbury Common.

The woman, who was taking two dogs for a walk, was unable to free herself when her right leg was stuck in the metal grid above the knee. It was already getting dark when she became trapped, and although the grid is near the Chipping Sodbury Golf Club, it was out of view of anyone arriving or leaving. It was only when teacher Clive Reynolds left the clubhouse and was walking towards his car that he heard the woman's cries for help.

Mr Reynolds said: "I was trying to work out where they were coming from and wondered if it was just kids skylarking. "But I decided to have a drive around and suddenly the headlamps on the car picked out the lady. "She had tried to get out of the grid but her knee had become too swollen to go through the bars. "She was clearly in some discomfort and I went straight back to the golf club and they called for help."

Mr Reynolds, who teaches design and technology at Mangotsfield School, said the dogs had stayed with the woman, who thought she was going to end up spending the night trapped. It needed a team of fire fighters to cut through the grid's bars in order to free her.

Mr Reynolds, who is secretary of Chipping Sodbury Cricket Club, was at the golf club to make final arrangements with chef Ian Wood for a dinner dance the following night.

It is believed the woman did not own the dogs but was walking them for someone else. Fire brigade spokesman Tim Wood said: "We were able to release the lady in about ten minutes and she was then checked over by an ambulance crew. "It was a remote spot and she had already been there for nearly two hours when she was eventually found."
