Outstanding Service to Cricket Awards 2004

The England and Wales Cricket Board in conjunction with the other 38 cricket boards have trawled the clubs of these boards, with the object of identifying and rewarding persons who have given outstanding service to their clubs.

The rewards are aimed at seven categories that encompass all aspects of the functionality of both a cricket club and a cricket league.

From the 34 national nominations, seven were from the Gloucestershire Cricket Board; two of these nominations come from local Cricket Club – Chipping Sodbury.

On Monday October 4th Chipping Sodbury Cricket Club Members Jeff Long and Mark Reynolds will be travelling to the home of Cricket “Lords” to receive their individual accolades. Jeff Long has been nominated in the all rounder category – a volunteer who wears many hats and keeps the club running, which highlights Jeff’s 35 year commitment to the club, which has seen him run the bar, fixture secretary, first eleven captain, league fixture pool secretary and his current role of club groundsman, where he has gained professional qualifications for the role he currently performs.

24 year old Mark Reynolds, part of a cricketing dynasty that includes his father - Clive, and two brothers, Paul and Dave who are all actively involved in the Club, Mark has been nominated in the Youth Work Category, where his efforts in establishing the Club’s excellent web site, the management of at one time or another of the clubs under 11,13 and 17 teams, teams that he also played in his 14 year association with the club, the role and responsibility of representing the youth section on the management committee has been acknowledged together with organising of the external training and development of seven coaches.

The day at Lords includes a tour of the hallowed ground, a luncheon attended by many of the current English test team, followed by a presentation and speech from cricket lover and impressionist Rory Bremner.

Chipping Sodbury says that no club can survive without the unstinting hard work and commitment of people like Jeff and Mark, who give their time freely along with others within the club to make it an enjoyable and excellent place to either play or be involved in the development of both junior members and the cricket club itself.

This is a fitting tribute to two hard working members of a team of volunteers who all give their time for the benefit of Chipping Sodbury Cricket Club.
