A Belter Of A Final League Weekend Has Lined Itself Up In Bristol
Article Date: 24th August 2005
And it all comes down to this...
Well here we are. As I write this it's the Wednesday before the last weekend of 2005 league cricket at Chipping Sodbury Cricket Club. This weekend is the culmination of what a lot of us have been building toward all season.
These final weekends have been good reflections of the club's depth in recent years. Year on year the same weekend seems to throw up a promotion/title chase or two. This year, the 2nds and 3rd XI are in the thick of it.
The 1st XI
The 1st XI this year unfortunately missed the chance of promotion. However all is still to play as they look for the important position and next best thing, 2nd place. They are home to Bristol Pakistanis 1st XI. Play will start at 1.30pm.
The 2nd XI
Here's probably where the highest amount of tension will surface this coming weekend as the Sodbury 2nd XI look for championship glory.
It's gonna be a cracker of a final Saturday in this league. With Bristol Pakistanis losing 2 weeks on the trot it looks like Chipping Sodbury have gone to the top of Bristol and District 2nd XI Senior Division for the first time this season.
But Bishopston are right up there and will be looking (I think) for a Bristol Pakistanis win, which may give Bishopston a major championship chance if they can get 26 from Portishead.
But Sodbury will be looking to continue their winning run, take 26 points and the championship from their match against Bristol Pakistanis at Lees Hill.
This is what sport is all about and going into the final weekend of the league season all 3 teams can take the championship.....I think!!
The 3rd XI
Unfortunately I haven't been able to get a glance at the current league tables but Sodbury will be playing Bohemians away. Although things look very good for promotion, the 3rds will hope to take all the points and secure the league as Champions - a league which they top at the moment.
So there we have it. The league season has almost ended and yet the 2005 Ashes are still alive and kicking. A series that has captured the nation's imagination and created many column inches which have commented on cricket's brushing aside of football (if only for a bit). The series looks to continue at Trent Bridge, Nottingham on Thursday (tomorrow) as a country peers on expectantly.
The nation hopes for English success in these final 2 tests. Chipping Sodbury Cricket Club hopes for similar from their teams (but maybe not on the same level!).
