The development of umpires is a key priority within Gloucestershire’s Workforce Development Plan and is also a key objective and requirement for Leagues throughout the county.
As a Cricket Board, Gloucestershire Cricket Board (GCB) is very committed to seeing an increase in the number of active qualified umpires and this is why they have joined forces with the local leagues and the Gloucestershire Association of Cricket Officials (GACO) to implement a plan that will see the number of league matches officiated by qualified umpires increase steadily over time.
As a result the Gloucestershire Cricket Board is launching a recruitment initiative alongside the ECB advertising campaign "Stay in the game" designed to encourage players to move into umpiring/scoring.
This initiative is supported right from the top down, through the West of England Premier League (WEPL), the Bristol and District Cricket Association and the County Leagues and the local District Leagues.
Person from CSCC must go on Umpire Course
All 80 WEPL clubs are required to send at least one person to attend and pass an Umpire training course this close season and obtain the ECB Level 1 qualification in time for the new campaign and sanctions have been put in place for clubs that fail to do so (NB The County League applied sanctions in 2008 and 2009 and they and the various other District Leagues may adopt a similar approach in future years).
As a result the Gloucestershire Cricket Board and GACO are providing three ACO Level 1 courses over the coming months, in preparation for the season. These courses will be delivered by qualified ECB instructors and following successful completion of the course will give candidates a formal ECB recognised qualification, the first step on the pathway for any individual who wishes to officiate ECB Premier League Cricket, multi-day cricket and First Class cricket.
It is important for all prospective Umpire and Scorer candidates in our area to understand that the only training available that will enable a route to the very top of the Officials ladder is exclusively provided by ECB, and the ECB training programme. For all aspiring Officials, whatever level they wish to attain, the ECB pathway provides them with a structured route, and support from Cricket’s National and International body.
Gloucestershire Cricket Board are hoping to see strong support from clubs in nominating candidates for the training. At the bottom of this article are the details of the courses we are running and an application form for clubs or candidates to complete.
The cost of the course will be £45 which will include an ECB workbook, a CD Rom and membership to the ECB ACO for a year. All fees will be paid by Chipping Sodbury Cricket Club. On the successful completion of the course candidates will qualify for a 50% reimbursement of the course fee through their local league.
Please note that Gloucestershire Cricket Board will only accept applications with full payment attached.
If you are interested in attending a course please complete an application form and return with a cheque for £45 made payable to ‘Gloucestershire Cricket Board’ to:
