Bristol and District Senior Division

Chipping Sodbury 1st XI v Stoke Bishop 1st XI (HOME)

Craig Scully hit his maiden league Century at the Ridings on Saturday to set Chipping Sodbury in motion to a much-needed victory over Stoke Bishop in the Bristol & District Senior Division. Currently propping up the table, Stoke Bishop won the toss and asked Sodbury to bat first on a green-tinged track that promised to offer some sideways movement to the seamers.

Openers Rich Bennett and Craig Scully provided a sensible start taking the score to 82 without loss after twenty overs. Scully then sought to up the pace of the innings and it wasn’t until the 32nd over that a wicket fell with Bennett being bowled through the gate having made a patient 51. Scully reached 3 figures in aggressive style before succumbing to Zabair for an excellent 104 from 106 balls. That brought Steve Clapp to join Richard Wood at the wicket. The pair put another 80 runs on the board in the final 9 overs to give sodbury a final score of 249 for 4. Clapp was dismissed for a fine 35 in the final over whilst Wood finished unbeaten with 49 having struck some typically lusty blows.

After the interval, Stoke bishop never looked in contention as wickets fell regularly throughout their innings. Jeremy Tudway-Quilter Penfold was the main wicket taker for Sodbury returning figures of 5 for 35 before bowing out of the attack. He was ably supported by the dependable Rob Wakefield who claimed 2 for 26 and David Reynolds who claimed 2 for 18. Only Ramesh, of Stoke Bishop, managed to get to grips with Sodbury’s bowling. He ended up with 53 not out as Reynolds took the final wicket and Sodbury secured victory by a margin of 147 runs.

Bristol and District Senior Division 2nd XI

Chipping Sodbury 2nd XI v Stoke Bishop 2nd XI (AWAY)

Chipping Sodbury’s title ambitions suffered a blow on Saturday as Stoke Bishop were unable to raise a team. The match was not included in the league table for Sodbury and as league positions are decided by the average point score and not the total number of points, Sodbury were unable to gain the required boost.

The 2s played a friendly against a team in Cardiff, but unfortunately lost.

Bristol and District Division One 'A' XI

Chipping Sodbury 3rd XI v Carsons/Mangotsfield 3rd XI

When Richard Deane, the Chipping Sodbury skipper, informed the players that ‘a win today will win us the ‘A’ division title’, with two matches to spare, he would have had no idea of the spectacular way it would have been achieved by a side that has consistently performed well with both the bat and ball throughout the season. Richard Deane won the toss and decided to bat first even though the wicket was still fairly wet from the rain that the local area had been receiving over the last few days.

Both Steve Harvey (16) and Rob Long (17) batted with patience but were unable to consolidate on the good start they had achieved. Malcolm Soper batting at number 3 scored a lusty 59. The real fireworks started when Jimmy Deane and Steve Doidge came together. The two had never batted together before but by the end of the innings they had put on an unbroken stand of 317 in a little over 26 overs.

Jimmy Deane scored an elegant and controlled 145 which included 3 sixes and 20 fours. Steve Doidge scored a bludgeonous 160 which included 12 sixes, 20 fours and two damaged roof tiles on the village hall! Carsons did not actually bowl that badly and skipper Paul Carey returned good figures of 2 for 17 off 7 overs. A third century was achieved by the bowling of M.Headford who had 0-119 off 8 overs! Final score for Sodbury, a rather large 426-3.

Carsons were always going to struggle to match this enormous total and good bowling displays from Steve Bush (3-6) and Craig Dyer (3-13) simply compounded the problems faced by skipper Paul Carey and his players. Good fielding and some superb catching from Steve Harvey, Jimmy Deane and Steve Doidge made this a very memorable day for the Chipping Sodbury players as Carsons fell to 78 all out.

This marvellous season could be attributed to a number of reasons but the strength and depth of the players available at Chipping Sodbury and the superb way in which skipper Richard Deane manages his side rank high among the reasons for the team’s success. Well played lads and good luck for the 2005 season!

Bristol and District Division Three 'A'XI

Chipping Sodbury 4th XI v YMCA 'B' XI

Sodbury 4th's recorded the double over YMCA B on Saturday, being asked to bat by the YMCA captain, the home attack had Sodbury wobbling at 39-3, but a 64 run partnership between Paul Crabtree and Paul Morse cemented the innings, Crabtree departed for a well struck 58, the arrival at the crease of 13 year Tom Febry saw some intelligent running between the wickets as he and Paul Morse added a further 40 runs at a crucial part of the Sodbury innings.

The in form Morse was eventually dismissed for a useful 28. Febry was the next to go scoring 34 with some well timed cricket shots. It was then left to another 13 year old Lewis Dyer with 8 not out, to get Sodbury maximum batting points as their innings closed at 177-7. Paul Sykes taking 4-43.

YMCA got off to a solid start in reply, reaching 48 with out loss, before Jared Greenhalgh took the first wicket of Sykes, as they then slumped to 78-9, as Tony Wardle found his line and length to cause havoc among the home side batting as he took 6-23 from 23 overs. Some low order big hitting from Tony Wilcox enabled to get YMCA another batting point before being all out at 101, as Alan Case took the final wicket to claim 3 - 20, Sodbury attack being supported by the luckless Darren Bell and some excellent ground fielding and catching.

Chipping Sodbury would to thank their hosts - YMCA for staging the game at the last moment due to Sodbury's venue being deemed unplayable.
