Bristol and District Senior Division
Chipping Sodbury 1st XI v Coalpit Heath (HOME)
Chipping Sodbury compounded their recent run of bad form with a disappointing loss to Coalpit Heath at the Ridings on Saturday. From the start of the game Sodbury didn’t seem to be in the right frame of mind and this was shown by a lacklustre, and out of character fielding display as Wayne Kylander helped Coalpit Heath race off with a decent start against the bowling of Toghill and Penfold.
Jeremy Penfold worked hard in his 11 over opening spell but only managed to take the one wicket ending up with figures of 1 for 34. 1st change bowlers Rob Wakefield, bowling from the Wickwar Road end, and Richard Wood, bowled tightly and at one stage looked to be restricting the away team to a score of less than 200. Wood ended up taking 4 wickets, but with Kylander holding up the other end, the final overs of the innings were always in the balance. Kylander took 20 from Rob Wakefield’s last over racing to his century in the process and Heath closed their innings with a competitive score of 207 for 8.
The Sodbury reply never really got into third gear with wickets falling regularly. Ed Richardson with 46 and David Reynolds with 32 offered some mid-innings promise but with 20 overs to go and a run a ball required, wickets continued to fall. The required run rate continued to escalate and when Steve Clapp was adjudged run out with his bat grounded just the other side of Nibley, Sodbury were well on their way to defeat and ended up being bowled out for 157.

Bristol and District Senior Division 2nd XI
Coalpit Heath 2nd XI v Chipping Sodbury 2nd XI
On a dry and slightly cloudy day, Ian Davis the skipper of home side Coalpit Heath, won the toss and asked Chipping Sodbury to bat on a slow but otherwise good looking batting track. A steady start from openers Mike Pearson and Paul Crabtree saw only 19 runs off the first 10 overs but later and more aggressive hitting from Crabtree (51), Ian Hobbs (55), Leroy Walters (30) and some useful runs from the lower order saw Sodbury achieve a respectable 215-8 off there allocation of 45 overs. The best bowling display for the home side coming from S.Tremlin with 3 for 58.
In reply Coalpit Heath had to endure some aggressive good length bowling from the openers Jamie Wakefield (2-6) and Simon Wilcox (2-24). Each bowler bowled with precision and pace and once the first 3 Coalpit Heath batsmen had been removed they never looked like putting themselves into a winning position. Further good bowling from Darryl Jones (4-29) and Hugh Sprackman (2-20) saw the home side fall to 88 all out from 31 overs. The only Coalpit Heath player to score any significant runs was R.Williams with 25.
A rare defeat of league leaders Bristol Pakistanis has meant that the whole season will go down to the wire. Chipping Sodbury still reside in second place, but this Saturday they could be assisted greatly by the unfortunate fact that Bristol Pakistani’s opponents Stoke Bishop have consistently failed to raise a 2nd XI team. Saturday looks to be no different. If so, Sodbury should need 24 points from a maximum of 26 to grab the league championship from the grasp of the current league leaders. Chipping Sodbury play Almondsbury 2nd XI at The Ridings, this Saturday at 1.30pm.

Bristol and District ‘A’ XI Division One
YMCA 3rd XI v Chipping Sodbury 3rd XI
Although Sodbury had already secured Division One, skipper Rich Deane was keen to end the season on a high by winning their last two games. Despite Sodbury clinching the league, a win for YMCA would make them runners-up. Sodbury skipper Rich Deane won the toss and decided to bat.
In the absence of centurions Jimmy Deane and Steve Doidge from the previous week Sodbury got to work with a slow but sure start from Rob Long (9 from 80 balls!), Rich Deane (20) and also some good contributions from Steve Harvey (22) and Malcolm Soper (37). But the real star of Sodbury’s innings was Peter Mardle, who scored a beefy 100 not out including ten 6’s and five 4’s.
The YMCA bowlers being taken a part by Mardle, their first three bowlers all going for more than 40 runs. S.Parker the pick of the YMCA bowlers taking 2-15 off 2 overs. Therefore Sodbury’s total finished 205-5 off their 45 overs, still 221 runs short of their previous week’s total!
After the Tea break with a good target to set up a close match, Opening batsmen B.Frost and E.Davis put on 20 before captain Rich Deane removed Frost with a great catch from the bowling of Chipping Sodbury vetern legend Cav Smythe, taking 2-27. Although the fall of an early wicket, YMCA number 3&4 batsmen Dave Spink and Steve Parker set about winning the game for YMCA.
YMCA then needed 36 runs from 6 overs so a close finish was brewing. Spink making a very important 94 to keep YMCA very much in the game before bowled by Steve Bush. Bush bowling two good spells taking 3-33. Then went Parker run out from a very good piece of fielding from Rob long for 32.
Then the Sodbury bowlers started to take over the show, centurion from the first innings Peter Mardle (3-16) had a good spell of bowling including another great piece of fielding from Rob long taking a nice catch at extra cover. An undisputed man of the match for Pete Mardle. YMCA were all out for 185 the highest total scored against Sodbury this season and were really the only team to come close to them.

Bristol and District ‘A’ XI Division Three
Abbots Leigh 3rd XI v Chipping Sodbury 4th XI
Sodbury 4th XI finished the season with a resounding 10 wicket victory over Abbots Leigh at Portishead on Saturday, the home Captain winning the toss and electing to bat saw his side slump from 16 without loss to 23 all out, Darren Bell gaining more luck this week than the previous week, the rapidly improving 16 year old took 4 -13 as he ripped out the top order, Richard Kingscott and Tony Wardle shared the remaining wickets to fall. Once again Sodbury were aided by some excellent catching.
Sodbury needed 10 overs to reach the target without any mishaps, Chris Young 16 not out and Lewis Dyer 4 not out led the way.
This game concluded Sodbury 4th team’s first ever league season, and they ended with an admirable playing record of played 13 won 8 and lost 5 and a league position in the top 4.
With youth forming the backbone of the side, everyone has gained from the experience and the team will be a year older next season. If the development continues the current players will be a force to be reckoned with, not only within the league but also challenging for places further up the senior sides within Chipping Sodbury CC.
