Chipping Sodbury Cricket Club in Bristol is 150 Years Old this year!

07/08/2004 - Report by Dave Reynolds

Bristol and District Senior Division

Chipping Sodbury 1st XI v Twyford House 1st XI (AWAY)

Chipping Sodbury continued their recent downturn in form with a disappointing defeat at Twyford house on Saturday. Sodbury lost the toss and were put in the field on a searing hot afternoon. The Twyford openers made a solid start against the Sodbury opening bowlers, Jon Toghill and Jamie Wakefield, and Sodbury were unable to make a breakthrough until the partnership had produced 100 runs with Sodbury dropping chances from each opener in the process.

Richard Wood and Rob Wakefield then entered the attack as Sodbury started to apply some mid-innings pressure. Regular wickets fell as a result, with Wood ending up with figures of 4 for 21 and Wakefield 3 for 49 from his 15 overs. Twyford eventually finished with a useful 201 for 8.

Twyford’s opening pair of Ball and Sutton started Sodbury’s innings with some tight bowling, which coupled with a deteriorating pitch which offered increasingly variable bounce, meant Sodbury’s opening batsmen found it difficult to put runs on the board.

After the fall of the first wicket, wickets continued to fall regularly and only Rich Bennett with 23 and Rich Wood with 19 managed to get to grips with the unpredictable wicket and the tight Twyford House bowling. Sodbury finished bemused and well short of their target on 97 all out.

Bristol and District Senior Division 2nd XI

Chipping Sodbury 2nd XI v Twyford House 2nd XI (HOME)

Sodbury continued their fight for the title last Saturday as they won at home against Twyford House. On a very hot day it was always going to be a struggle for the team fielding first and after winning the toss Twyford decided to bat.

Twyford Innings

They got off to a good start as A. Merler and P. White hit 32 from the first 6 overs on a lightening quick outfield. At this stage it already looked like it was going to be a hard afternoon for Sodbury’s bowlers and a good one for Twyford’s batsmen. However things began to change as Sodbury started to bowl a better line and the run-rate dropped.

With the first wicket falling in the 14th over, left arm seamer Mark Graham then kept things tight as he was introduced into Sodbury’s attack. Wickets then fell steadily with only a few Twyford batsmen chipping in. A crucial 9th wicket partnership of 34 led by J. Noel (31) was ended with a superb low flat throw from Daryl Jones in the outfield. After the final wicket Twyford were all out for 169. M. Graham finished with figures of 3-38 from his 14 overs.

Sodbury Innings

Although not a huge total, Sodbury had recently been known to falter in such run chases. The innings again started badly with Steve Harvey being bowled by M. Smith in the second over. Smith continued to bowl tidily to opener Jeff Long and new batsmen Mark Reynolds. However, controlled batting from the pair brought stability to the innings and kept Sodbury in sight of victory. Reynolds was first out for a steady 57, making amends for his golden duck the week before. Jeff Long followed with an equally watchful 49. Although the infamous Sodbury shuffle produced some nervous overs as quick wickets fell, the Twyford House total was passed with the loss of 6 wickets.

Bristol and District Division One 'A'XI

Chipping Sodbury 3rd XI v Bedminster 3rd XI

On a hot sunny day, Chipping Sodbury skipper Richard Deane was very pleased to win the toss on a very good batting wicket. A superb batting display from the visitors (Sodbury) saw a superb chanceless century from Steve Febry (134) and a smashing half century from Steve Doidge (63) which included 6 sixes and a smashed green house! The local side (Bedminster) did not help there cause by giving Sodbury 45 extras including 30 wides.

The best bowling display coming from M.Prescot (4-64). In reply Bedminster never looked like getting close to the Sodbury total especially when rising under 15’s star Craig ‘Dynamo’ Dyer look 5 superb wickets for 20 runs. This young cricketer bowled a good line and length and will no doubt be bowling at a higher level within a couple of years.

The only Bedminster player to score any significant runs was J.Bisp with 23. Superb Sodbury fielding only compounded the local sides misery. With Sodbury in this form the ‘A’ division title looks ever closer.

Bristol and District Division Three 'A'XI

Chipping Sodbury 4th XI v Almondsbury 3rd XI

Chipping Sodbury 4th's recorded their biggest win to date since their inception 1n 2003 against Almondsbury 3rd's by the margin of 166 runs. Winning the toss and electing to bat Sodbury scored runs early at a fast pace, as Craig Hambly, Tom Thayer and Andy Shield all got in to the twenties before being dismissed. The innings was given terrific momentum in the final stages as firstly Paul Morse with 77no and Steve Bush with a quick fire 42 off 17 balls enable Sodbury to close their innings on 242 - 8.

Defending a huge total Sodbury were able to open their attack with off -spinner Alan Case, bowling to an aggressive field, the Irishman recorded career best figures of 7-30 from 10 unchanged overs as Case's co partners in the bowling attack Tony Wardle and Richard Kingscott shared the remaining Almondsbury wickets to fall, as the home side were dismissed 76.
