Life Member Peter Guy Passes Away
Article Date: 29th May 2006
Chipping Sodbury Cricket Club lowered its flag to half-mast this week to mark the passing of life member Peter Guy.
Peter was Club Captain for Sodbury’s centenary season in 1960 and will also be remembered as one of the co-authors of The Centenary Handbook, along with his close friend and Vice Captain John King.
Dozens of hours of painstaking research went into the handbook which acted as a comprehensive history of one of the oldest clubs in the South Gloucestershire area. A large amount of the handbook's historical content can be seen in the history section of the Chipping Sodbury Cricket Club website.
The MCC Cricket Museum at Lord’s was so impressed with the publication and Sodbury’s association with the famous Grace family - WG himself appeared for the club during this golden era - that a copy was deposited in their archives. A fitting reward for the co-authors’ dedication and hard work.
Peter was made a Life Member at the culmination of the hugely successful Centenary season and continued to take a keen interest in the club into the new millennium.
On his last visit to The Ridings Ground in the summer of 2005, he was delighted to hear of the club's latest developments both on and off the pitch, and was impressed to see the recently constructed second pitch.
The club is indebted to Peter for the valuable contribution he made to Chipping Sodbury cricket and sends its condolences to his wife Shelia.
