What a great game of cricket we saw last Thursday (9th June 2011) .Chipping Sodbury and Downend produced a wonderful display of bowling that saw the game go down the the last ball of the match.
Downend won the toss and elected to bat first. Downend got off to a solid start and were 46 without loss after 8 overs when the Sodbury offspinner Ryan Liddington was introduced into the attack.
He struck twice in his first over removing the dangerous S Bhosale for 25 & C Loud for 15.
Wickets then fell at regular intervals with all the bowlers contributing. Downend finished on 78 after 20 overs. For Chipping Sodbury Matt Bethell 4-0-8-2,Dan Brown 4-0-19-4 and Ryan Liddington 4-0-12-3 were the pick of the bowlers.
When Sodbury came to bat they found it extremely difficult to score runs against an accurate Downend bowling attack.
Sodbury lost their 1st wicket with the score on 18 after 2 overs but then wickets fell at regular intervals and Sodbury were 42 for 6 after 12 overs and 79 looked a long way off.
Chris vd Merwe then hit some big shots and we got to 69 before Chris tried one shot to many and was bowled for 19. This left us with 10 runs to get with 3 overs left and 2 wickets remaining.
We lost our 9th wicket without adding to the score and we still required 10 runs with 12 balls left. Ali Scott was joined at the crease by Jack Thacker and they took the score to 72 with 6 balls remaining. They took 5 runs off 5 balls and required 2 to win off the last ball, Jack Thacker calmly smacked the ball to cow corner for a 4 and Sodbury won by 1 wicket.
Thanks to both sets of teams for a great game of cricket played in a wonderful spirit and also thanks to all the spectators who turned up to support both teams.
