Find Out The Latest On Everything That's Happening In Our 150th Year!

Article Date: 3rd March 2010

Chipping Sodbury Cricket Club in Bristol is 150 Years Old this year!

150th Year is Hotting up!

It's all getting very exciting at the cricket club as an action packed 2010 cricket season gets nearer. There's lots happening so let's take a look - but first remember you can keep up-to-date with all events on the cricket club events page.

NatWest CricketForce 2010

It all begins with senior players, supporters, youth players and parents all coming together for NatWest CricketForce 2010 on Saturday 27th March, continuing on Sunday 28th March. NatWest CricketForce is an ECB initiative that encourages cricket supporters, their friends and families to give something back to their local community cricket club by volunteering to undertake renovations to clubhouses and grounds.

There's so much that we need to prepare the club for this year so we really need you to turn up on that weekend to help. You can find out exactly what is happening over the next few weeks on this website.

April - The Sportsman's Dinner

The cricket club kicks off the season with a massive bang with the hosting of the Sportman's Dinner on Friday 9th April taking place in a large marquee at Chippig Sodbury CC. This isn't just your usual club dinner, this is aimed at a really large audience and that's because we have some of the biggest names on the after dinner speech circuit.

To start off, we have one of the greats from the Rugby world, rugby union player Gareth Chilcott who played at prop for Bath and England, making his England debut against Australia in 1984. We asked him what he would usually be doing on a Friday night in April and Gareth told us "I go down the pub for a quiet pint followed by fifteen noisy ones!".

Following that up is another massive name, this time from the world of cricket! Who could forget in 1994 him ripping through the South African batting order to finish with figures of 9-57, still the 8th best individual bowling figures in Test history and a performance that undoubtedly contributed to his selection as one of Wisden's Five Cricketers of the Year in 1995.

Yes that's right for one night only we have Devon Malcolm. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Malcolm was one of England's few genuinely fast bowlers of the 1990s. Devon is now setting his sights on becoming an international umpire and is sure to entertain during his speech at Sodbury.

As well as the hugely entertaining speeches from Gareth Chilcott and Devon Malcolm, there is a gorgeous three course meal being prepared and cooked by a very successful local chef who on the night will actually be cooking for us at the CSCC venue.

Get your tickets - first come first served!

Many tickets have already been bought for this entertainment filled night, and although the night is mainly aimed at businesses the demand has been so great that the club has had to make two tables available for the club's players, members and supporters, all of course are welcome but you have to be quick - first come, first served.

Tickets are £45 per head, which we're sure you'll agree is exceptional value for these big names, superb food and an amazing night to kick off Chipping Sodbury's 150th anniversary year! To find out if places are still available call 1st XI team captain Jay Rendell who is organising the event. You can find him at the Sodbury Pavilion cricket shop in Chipping Sodbury High Street or phone him on 07899 983534.

And the Next Day - A Disco for the Members!!

On Saturday 10th April the cricket club has arranged a big night for all players, members and supporters to celebrate the beginning of a huge season for the club. This pre-season disco is in the erected marquee and will be a truly great night for everyone.

150th Anniversary Handbook

Steve Hill has been doing some sterling work on the handbook for the club's anniversary and is currently working hard to get it ready for the season. Angela Lane, the Editor of local monthly publication The Boundary Magazine has also been working hard for the cricket club and has raised over £1000 through advertising from local businesses keen to support the cricket club in this memorable year.

Big thanks go out to The Boundary Magazine and all the local businesses for their very welcome support - keep an eye out for all of them when you get your hands on your own copy of the 150th Handbook - around 2000 copies are being printed so make sure you get one!

Draw tickets being Printed

Draw tickets are currently being printed for some great prizes which will be drawn at the club's end of season bash. Craig Scully and Bob & Sue Soper are organising the draw, so keep your eyes open and support generously - you will be asked to sell them!

Cricket Week - from Monday 19th July

MCC, Leinster CC, Dorridge and Bristol &District XI

One of the cricketing focuses of the year will be the Cricket week, beginning on Monday 19th July with a match against regular tourers Dorridge Cricket Club. The week is coming together with every day that passes. We are now looking for umpires from CSCC and anyone wanting to score in these matches to contact Chair of Cricket Tony Garton on 07831 403635.

We are welcoming some great teams including the MCC, Leinster Mens and Womens teams, Bristol Pheonix and a Bristol & District League Rep XI. Keep your eyes open for more information. There will also possibly be some youth cricket happening on the Friday, so please watch this space for that.

The Sodbury Sixes are Back!

All teams are said to be confirmed for the return of the much popular Sodbury sixes on Sunday 18th July, a beer 'tent' and Pig roast are on the cards as well as some amazing cricketing fun! More information to follow.

The Return of the Marquee

The end of the season sees the return of the marquee for an amazing finish to the season. On Saturday 18th September the 150th Anniversary season comes to a close with a Presentation Night for Senior and Youth players, with entertainment and buffet, held in the marquee at the Club.

This event will replace the club's 2010 Dinner and Dance at Chipping Sodbury Golf Club and will also be where the youth section's players will receive their annual awards.

Looking for Volunteers

Of course throughout 2010 we will be needing plenty of you to volunteer, there are many events taking place where we will need help on the evening and the morning after - the club needs to be cleared so that it's clean for our next visitors. Don't be shy to offer your help throughout our 150th year!

More Social Events

There are other social events taking place such as Race Nights and maybe even a Barn Dance so there will be plenty to do! Get involved at CSCC in 2010 and celebrate with us!
