Sat 2nd XI Will No Longer Be Tied To 1st XI During Promotion/Relegation
Article Date: 18th October 2010
You may be aware that WEPL has been involved in a consultation exercise with regard to reorganisation within the WEPL pyramid of clubs.
Under the aegis of ECB, all clubs received questionnaires detailing a number of possible format changes, and were asked to reply with their favoured solution.
Replies from the clubs currently in the WEPL system indicated a clear majority in favour of the WEPL Board proposal to run a 2nd XI competition in parallel with the existing 1st XI competition with independent promotion and relegation.
Therefore, as a result of these replies, WEPL Board has decided to implement a change in structure in order to improve the standard of 2nd XI cricket.
Briefly, it has been decided to "replicate" the pyramid for all club 2nd XIs. Thus from 2011 all club 2nd XIs will be able to rise and fall within the pyramid, dependent on their own performance, and will not be tied in with the status or results of their 1st XIs.
As with 1st XIs currently, a club 2nd XI will not be forced to accept promotion if it prefers to stay where it is. However, the opportunity is now there for improving 2nd XIs to prove their worth at a higher level in the pyramid.
The process will begin in the 2011 season, at the end of which, the independent promotion and relegation of 2nd XIs will commence.
The benefits, or otherwise, of this new system will be closely monitored by the Board. Should clubs face increased travel which becomes unacceptable to the majority, the system will be reviewed.
