Bristol And District League Season Ends With Huge Club Success

Article Date: 1st September 2005

Chipping Sodbury Cricket Club in Bristol is 150 Years Old this year!

Last Saturday the 2005 season ended in amazing style. Both the 2nd XI and 3rd XI became champions of their leagues, which when added to the 4th XI's 2005 championship title of a few weeks ago is a brilliant success for Chipping Sodbury Cricket Club.

2nd XI

The 2nd XI ended the season with a crunch game against Bristol Pakistanis at Lees Hill. Bristol Pakistanis had been top of the league for the whole season until the penultimate game which saw them lose the top spot.

The 2nd XI then went top and Bishopston went to 2nd place. Chipping Sodbury needed 23 points from the game against Bristol Pakistanis and after dropping 1 point after making 159, CSCC needed a tight bowling performance to secure a victory.

A small total created an extremly tense finale which saw Bristol Pakistanis creep toward the total with only 2 wickets remaining. However the 2 wickets were eventually taken admidst wild scenes of jubilation at Lees Hill. What a win! What an end to the league season. We all play the game for moments like this.

3rd XI

Going into the final match in first place, the 3rd XI faced a top versus bottom match against Bohemians. Win this and they would be promoted as champions.

Sodbury fielded a side which hadn't been as strong as in past games, but this would hopefully not make a big difference. Setting Bohemians a total of 167 to chase down, a strong bowling performance saw them bowled out for a small 49 in 20.3 overs.

A good victory rounded up a very successful season for a team which has seen a large amount of success in recent years. Make no bones about it, to get out of the bottom division of the 2nd XI League was not an easy feat. Everyone at CSCC would like to congratulate the team on its success and to Rich Deane who has continued to do a sterling job.

1st XI

The 1st XI's final game ended in defeat at home to Bristol Pakistanis. A defeat which saw a good season end in disappointment. The team was looking for the best possible from their final game which was to stay in second spot. Events turned out differently however and a loss to Bristol Pakistanis followed by the league champions Almondsbury losing to Coalpit Heath, meant Sodbury slipped to third place.

And so it was...

We now look to next year when all 4 teams will be looking to further the club's success. This year was certainly a great one for the club and it could get even better in 2006. Here's hoping.
