Remarkable Day Sees Two Tied Games At The Ridings!
Article Date: 18th June 2009
Sorry but it's been 5 days and I couldn't resist mentioning the cricket last Saturday - it was quite an amazing day at Chipping Sodbury, which culminated in 2 very exciting matches and some purely unbelievable cricket!
As usual it was good to hear some earlyish wins from the 1st and 5th XIs, but a first in the history of the club came as 2 games at the Ridings finished tied! For those who don't know, that is an extremely rare feat, but it's the manor that the 2nd XI claimed their tie against Bishopston Cricket Club which was quite extroadinary for the onlookers.
It was just so great for the club that a batting tail full of young'uns decided to wag so hard. It was just what the doctor ordered.
The Bishopston Cricket Club report read: "This was an astonishing game in the end, and the captain is reported to be uncertain as to whether he will ever recover from it...They ran well and one batsman scored a rapid-fire century as they chased down 11-an-over for the last fifteen – OUCH! None of the bowlers' analyses bear repeating here. Goodbye cruel world."
The Sodbury report read: "In one of the most exciting games ever seen at the Ridings, Sodbury produced a magnificent battling display to secure a tie against Bishopston Cricket Club."
"The visitors batted first and posted an impressive 251 for 4 from their 45 overs. Pick of the Sodbury attack was debutant Mason Poole who bowled superbly well in batsmen friendly conditions taking 2 for 27 from 8 overs."
"In reply Sodbury capitulated to 95 for 6 and were facing a heavy defeat with only Lee Walters (33) providing any real resistance in the top order."
"Needing ten an over with only 15 overs left, up stepped Mark Reynolds to produce the batting display of his life. He and Jack Townsend put on 45 for the seventh wicket before Townsend went for 20."
"Mason Poole (6) then stood firm to give Reynolds valuable support as did Craig Dyer (13). However when Dyer was out Sodbury still needed 28 to win with just one wicket left."
"Reynolds took the attack to Bishopston once more and was rewarded with his maiden league century in the final over before it was left to Kriss Hemming to try and save the game."
"Sodbury needed 6 runs from 3 balls and he managed 4 from the first two. In a pulsating finale the game remarkably came down to the last ball with Sodbury needing 2 to win."
"Hemming and Reynolds managed to scramble a single to bring the scores even and Sodbury had tied a game they never looked like getting anything from. Reynolds was the man of the moment finishing unbeaten with a magnificent 101."
