Wakefield Is The Star In Fine Sodbury Victory

Article Date: 28th June 2008

Chipping Sodbury Cricket Club in Bristol is 150 Years Old this year!

Bristol & North Somerset 1st XI; Claverham (74) lost to Chipping Sodbury (130-8) by 56 runs. SODBURY produced one their finest bowling and fielding performances for several years as they beat Claverham.

The visitors were asked to bat in grey conditions and soon lost opener Craig Scully.

Jerry Swatton soon followed for 12 and another quick wicket left Sodbury in familiar territory at 40 for 3.

Dave Reynolds (37) and skipper Jamie Rendell (18) then steadied the ship as the pair added 41 for the fourth wicket.

However both fell in quick succession to leave Sodbury reeling again. Wickets begun to tumble at regular intervals but it was John Rendell who stood firm and was the Sodbury saviour as he took the attack to Claverham with an excellent 30 not out.

Claverham simply had no answer to the Sodbury attack, especially Jamie Wakefield.

The young quick bowler produced the best Sodbury bowling display in recent times as he ripped through the hosts batting line up.

At one stage he had taken five wickets without conceding a run as Claverham collapsed to 19 for 6 with Jon Toghill, who also bowled superbly, picking up the other wicket.

Claverham then staged a revival as the sixth wicket pair put on 31, before the introduction of Steve Clapp broke the partnership.

It was then left to Toghill and Wakefield to finish the job as Claverham were routed for just 74.

The Sodbury bowlers were backed up by an excellent fielding display led by keeper John Rendell who rounded off a great all round game with five dismissals.

But it was the opening bowlers who stole the show with Toghill claiming 3 for 47 and man of the moment Wakefield led Sodbury from the field victorious with the amazing figures of 10-8-2-6.

Bristol and North Somerset 2nd XI; Chipping Sodbury (174 a.o) lost to Claverham (276) by 102 runs

SODBURY suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Claverham on Saturday.

The visitors batted first and posted an impressive 276 before being bowled out in the final over.

Craig Dyer (2 for 29) and Alex Tebbitt (3 for 37) did some early damage, and Tom Febry (3 for 61) and Harry Webb (2 for 68) picked up late wickets to ensure maximum bowling points.

However with 32 extras, Sodbury would be disappointed with their bowling display.

Sodbury were given a good start by the in-form opening pair of Harry Webb and Jeff Long.

They put on another half century stand before both fell quickly, Long for 29 and Webb for 41. Skipper Ian Hobbs (24) and veteran Mickey Pearson (27) provided some middle order resistance but the rest of the Sodbury batsmen were unable to chase down such a big target and were all out in the 36th over for 174.

Chipping Sodbury 3rd XI (186-8) beat St Mary Redcliffe 2nd XI (150 a.o) by 36 runs.

Sodbury pulled off a remarkable victory from finding themselves in a perilous position after being put into bat.

Chris Young hit 26, but he had no other support from the top order as Sodbury collapsed to 79 for 8.

However the evergreen pairing of skipper Richard Deane and Paul Joiner were in no mood to just roll over as they staged an outstanding comeback.

After starting steadily, they exploded in the final stages adding 107 for the ninth wicket to take Sodbury to 186 from their allotted overs. Deane anchored the partnership with 25 not out and Joiner was at his dominant best smashing several huge boundaries in his fine 88 not out.

The late Sodbury revival has shook the hosts' confidence and they struggled as they tried to chase down their target.

Kris Hemming opened up proceedings well claiming 3 for 15 and the rest of the Sodbury bowlers also bowled tightly to keep the pressure on Redcliffe.

It was then left to Jack Townsend to close the game in Sodbury's favour as he took 2 for 5 to bowl Redcliffe out for 150 and give Sodbury a victory they never looked like getting at one stage.
