A wet evening at The Ridings
The first round of the B&D Knock-Out cup began on Wednesday evening as Chipping Sodbury faced Claverham Cricket Club. It had been mostly dry all day, but as the players began to convene the heavens started to slowly release cricket poison. Once the rain had stopped, the match was reduced by 8 overs and so each team would face 16 overs each instead of the normal 20. The toss was won by Chipping Sodbury, which meant that Claverham were put into bat.
A tidy start
Claverham's innings started steadily with tight spells from Sodbury's opening bowlers Jon Toghill and 16 year old Jamie Wakefield. After the first 8 overs Claverham were 46 for 2. (Jon Toghill 4o 1m 16r 1w) and (Jamie Wakefield 4o 0m 22r 0w). Claverham then started to up the pace taking 16 off of Steve Clapp's first over. Clapp then tightened things up and ended with 35 from his 4 overs.
That was not before Claverham's Peypie hit a crashing 65, using his feet well to Clapp and Penfold. Peypie was then run out with a good piece of glove work by keeper John Rendell. Penfold finished with 4o 0m 32r 2w. Sodbury kept Claverham to 113 for 4 from their allotted overs, which from 16 overs on a damp pitch, did not seem a bad score.
A brisk start from Sodbury
Jerry Swatton and Craig Scully started the innings off for Sodbury and they did very well as they took the total up to 48 from the first 5 overs. A tight bit of bowling in the 7th over saw Swatton face 4 dot balls as he looked to get the ball away. Claverham sensed the wicket and the next ball Swatton was stumped for 30.
Runs Continued to Come
The clean hitting from Craig Scully continued until the 9th over when Scully was out, bowled to a low ball for 32. The score was 71. Ian Hobbs and captain Jon Toghill were now batting and it was crucial that Sodbury maintained the momentum. This they did and as the overs ticked by, the total seemed to be comfortably closer.
A Great Victory!
Sodbury passed the total of 113 with a thunderous shot through cover by Hobbs. Chipping Sodbury won by 8 wickets with 2 overs to spare. Hobbs ended on 30 not out and Toghill on 16 not out.
An all-round batting performance put Sodbury through and saw Claverham (whose league side plays 2 divisions above Sodbury's) go out at the first attempt.
Next Round
Sodbury will play Stapleton in the next round, at Home on Wednesday 9th of June.
